Finding a Writing Group

When I first started writing, no matter how much time I put into my craft, I knew something big was missing: Penguins A writing group!

It wasn’t until I found a writing group that finally my journey as a screenwriter started taking flight! We were able to grow together and help each other reach individual goals.

Finding the right group might seem a little intimidating but there are a ton of options out there. Here are 5 ways you can find and join a group of your own!

1) Join a group on social media.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to join a writing group is to find a thriving community on social media. Reddit r/screenwriting and Facebook Screenwriting are great starting points! Social media enables you to be a part of a group without leaving the comfort of your home.

2) Find a group on Meetup.com.

Meetup.com has a group for just about everything under the sun. More than likely, there is a bustling writing group not too far from you.

3) Check your local library or community center.

There are usually a lot more resources at libraries and community centers than people realize. Check their websites for schedules or call to find out what groups are active in your area.

4) Become a member of a writers association.

Writers associations are typically geared towards educating and connecting emerging writers. Many groups, like the International Screenwriters Association offer both free and paid memberships.

5) Form your own group!

If you can’t find a group that’s right for you, there’s no better time than the present to put together your own! Round up writing friends, or reach out and make new connections to fashion your very own writers group! To get you started, there are some useful recourses like this Writers Group Starter Kit from the University of North Carolina.

Good luck! And remember that WriterDuet is a great resource for all of your writing needs. ✍️
